RED DEAD REDEMPTION II
- Read Dead Redemption II
- Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4
- Genre: Action Adventure
- Release Date: 26th October 2018
- Developer: Rockstar Studios
Red Dead Redemption is the latest game in the Red Dead series, the first being Red Dead Revolver, which was set in 1880 and the game play was very arcade like in nature. The player experienced the story through a Bounty Hunter named “Red” whose father was killed by the antagonist General Diego. It’s a story of betrayal and revenge set in a spaghetti western theme.
The second game of the series, Red Dead Redemption, was set in 1911 and departed from the arcade like style, but was dubbed the spiritual successor of Red Dead Revolver. The story now follows ex-outlaw John Marston as he is blackmailed and deputized by the Bureau of Investigation to hunt and kill members of the Van der Linde gang whom he was a member of.
This story’s theme is redemption and atonement for earlier transgressions, my favourite encounters were with a mysterious stranger who seems to embody either the devil or death. Now we have Red Dead Redemption II set in 1899 twelve years prior to the events of Red Dead Redemption, our focus in now on Author Morgan who is presently with the Van der Linde gang.
They are running from the Pinkerton Detective Agency due to a botched robbery of a train belonging to the tycoon Leviticus Cornwall. These stories focused on trust, loyalty and the constraints and limitation of such. This is a must-buy for any gamer’s collection.
FALLOUT 76
- Fallout 76
- Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4
- Genre: Action Role Playing
- Release Date: November 14th 2018
- Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
The Fallout Series has a deep and engaging lore. The main setting of the series is that the history of our reality and the fallout reality was identical until after 1945 at which point our realities diverged. After this divergence the crucial scientific of discovery of capacitors did not occur for them till 2023 thus freezing technology into an extended 1950s conceptual designs of the future and its tech, all of which is heavily focused on nuclear energy and vacuum tubes.
Other geopolitical events occurred which plunged the world into nuclear war. The Fallout Series uses this as a backdrop to focus around the United States of America where various corporations shaped the future with ethically questionable technologies and where one corporation called Vault-Tec created these huge underground facilities called Vaults.
They managed to build one hundred and twenty-two (122) of them to protect people from the impending nuclear war and the annihilation of the human race. Throughout the series, Vault-Tec and its Vaults are found to have sinister purposes besides the altruistic claims of humanity preservation.
Enter the newest instalment Fallout 76 which features Vault 76 located in Appalachia, West Virginia where the player is one of the vault’s inhabitants leaving the confines of the vault on “Reclamation Day” in the year 2012 twenty-five (25) years after the “Great War”, Have Fun!
STARDEW VALLEY
- Stardew Valley
- Platforms iOS, Android
- Genre: Simulator Role Playing
- Release Date: 24th October 2018
- Developer: Eric Barone, Sickhead games
Stardew Valley is an Indie role-playing/farming simulator that originally was released on steam in February 2016. The game looks deceptively simple, but is very deep in the amount of activities and social interactions to participate in.
The production team has packed this game full of surprises and the format draws heavily from Harvest Moon, especially with the in-game seasons and a day and night cycle.
You are stuck as a nameless cubicle paper pusher in a big corporate company facing a state of depression and looking for a way out, when you gain an inheritance of a farm out in Stardew Valley, you then have to bootstrap it and figure out by trial and error how things work around here, while making friends with the local population.
Personally, I have enjoyed rebuilding the magical Community Center, which forces you to participate in different aspects of the game and not settle into a predictable safe state. All of this is now available on your phone so that you can experience the quirky fun of the valley on the go.
SOUL CALIBUR VI
- Soul Calibur VI
- Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4
- Genre: Fighting
- Release Date: 19th October 2018
- Developer: Bandai Namco Entertainment, Project Soul, Dimps, Bandai Namco Studios
Soul Calibur’s VI is the latest in the Soul Calibur series of which the story makes no coherent sense, or more accurately it is very convoluted and meandering. However, there is a main plot point in all of it, two magical blades, one called Soul Calibur the other Soul Edge. Soul Edge being a corrupting, disruptive force that turns all who wields it into nightmarish versions of themselves.
Soul Calibur being the opposite and the only tool that can destroy Soul Edge and its user. The rest of it literally spans space and time in a mind-bending time shifting plot, with various fighters competing to either destroy Soul Edge or wield it.
But in the words of one of my friends, “Soul Calibur has a story?!”. This game has tight and deep fighting mechanics that is easy to play but difficult to master, and that is all that matters.
FORZA 4
- Forza Horizon 4
- Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One
- Genre: Racing
- Release Date: 2nd October 2018
- Developer: Turn 10 Studios, Playground Games
This is the latest title in the Forza series, which is split into two subgroups. The first being Forza Motorsport which features all the regular vehicular pornography; real world physics, effects, vehicles and tracks. While the other is Forza Horizon, which is meant to be an open world play style along all the vehicular vanity of Forza Motorsport.
Horizon is not only the name of the title but also of a festival within the game world, where you are competing for points to advance and to ultimately win this multi vehicle, multitrack and terrain cross-country event, open world event. While Motorsport could be considered a more traditional serious racing title, both titles are detailed and engaging for any racing enthusiast because of this we feel that Horizon is worth placing a few dockets to purchase and own.
