1. What’s new in the game?
So you maybe interested in picking up Halcyon 6: Light Speed Edition thinking is a new, fresh sequel in the Halcyon series. However, you will notice there are two versions of the title, Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander and Halcyon 6 : Light Speed Edition.
Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander is the original release of the title on 9th September 2016 by the Developer/Publisher Massive Damage, Inc. while Halcyon 6: Light Speed Edition is a re-release of the original title with various optimizations and tweaks as outlined by the developer here.
The main storyline has not changed, however it will require less grinding to progress the story line forward, the developer states that the title could be finished within 12 hours if a person powers through it.
2. Difficulty Levels, Controls, and Interface Improvements!
The original incarnation of the title was a grind in various aspects. Thus, the Light Speed Edition (LSE) seeks to have those issues streamlined to allow for an expatiated progression without it bearing on your patience. The UI has been overhauled to allow for easier navigation and access to certain elements.
3. The World of Halcyon 6 and its Three Major Factions.
Halcyon 6 is a turn-based strategy game where the battles are won with your wits and courage, not just your technology.
It is set in what I assume is a distant future or maybe an advanced past where the local cluster of universe is like a busy highway teaming with nosey intergalactic life zipping demanding trading and threatening.
The game features three factions:
- The Terrans are mundane ole humans, that is the long and short of it, quite typical except for advance space faring Trekkie like technology under a unified military apparatus.
- The Chruul represent an overwhelming existential alien threat that has decimated the human expansion only to a handful of colonies, depots, and the alien flagship discovery of the Halcyon Spacebase.
- The Space-Pirates, a faction that everyone seems to be hate but have the most diverse membership especially when compared to other factions but seems to think that your co-opted Spacebase should be theirs.
4. General Thoughts on the Gameplay!
There is fun playing this game, but the pixel graphics my put players off along with its turn based nature. While the title does nothing new gameplay wise, it does refine what is does into no wasted parts.
In my opinion, person who are looking for a specific itch of indie, pixel, turn based, micro 4X, space RPG this is the game. Gamers will find a lot of systems, busy work, embellishments and pixel goodness to keep those with this particular taste primed and warp engines engaged.
