The Trinbagonian Soca Star Iwer George has released a new controversial track for Carnival 2024 called “Happy People”.
King George’s track has been met with mixed views because the first forty (40) seconds of the song simply reproduces the Trinidad and Tobago National Anthem, word for word.
The Anthem
The National Anthem of Trinidad and Tobago was written and composed by Patrick Castagne who passed away on 5th May 2000 at the age of eighty-three (83) years old. The Song was adopted as the national anthem during Trinidad and Tobago’s independence in 1962.
Iwer George
Iwer George, the fifty (59) year old soca legend, known for his incredulous, repetitive and infectious style of soca, has been making hits since 1995. The one time Trinidad and Tobago Road March Winner (2020) and Three Time International Soca Monarch Winner (2003, 2007 and 2020), blessed his 2024 fans with a three-minute track that has people’s opinions spilt on if he should have even used the entire anthem in his offering.
Feelings range from outrage, by those who think the use and subject of the song is offensive, to those who defend the artists’ music, saying that there is no such other vocal outrage for matters of greater concern than a song. Some even find that his rendition to be cruel irony, as the present social and economic climate is so much of a joke as the use of the anthem in such a manner.
